CBM and gross weight for a China–Iran trucking quote

A quote can only be as accurate as the packed cargo data. Measure the crate, pallet or carton after packing — not the bare product — and send the dimensions per package, package count, total gross weight and HS code.
- CBM = packed length × width × height in metres × quantity
- Gross weight includes product, pallet, crate, wrapping and protection
- List each package type separately when dimensions differ
- One standard FTL load is limited to 96 CBM and 25 tonnes; excess is quoted separately
- Out-of-gauge machinery needs a dimensioned drawing with weight, centre of gravity and lifting points
Calculate packed CBM
Convert centimetres to metres, then multiply length × width × height × number of identical packages. Ten crates measuring 1.20 × 0.80 × 1.00 m equal 9.60 CBM. Do not subtract empty space inside a crate and do not use the product dimensions before the pallet, timber or corner protection is added.
Report gross weight, not net weight
Gross kilograms include everything lifted onto the trailer: goods, pallets, crates, drums, wrapping and dunnage. A commercial invoice may show net weight, but the truck plan needs gross weight. For mixed cargo, give both the gross weight of each package group and the shipment total.
Why both numbers matter
Light, bulky cargo uses trailer volume first; dense cargo uses payload first. LCL is charged on the greater of actual and volumetric weight, but the conversion used for the shipment belongs in the written quote — do not guess a divisor. FTL is quoted as one vehicle, subject to both the 96 CBM and 25-tonne limits.
When dimensions become out-of-gauge
A single machine can be below the total CBM limit and still be too wide, high or long for a 13.6 m curtainsider. Send a drawing that shows packed overall dimensions, gross weight, centre of gravity and lifting points. The operations team then checks whether a 17.5 m low-bed or drop-deck trailer, crane work, lashing or permits are required. These items are quoted separately.
